On August 18, pharmacy leaders from health systems across the Inneo Alliance spent an hour and a half in a moderated conversation. There was no agenda deck, no presentation, and nothing was sold — Inneo convened and moderated the session, and the discussion belonged to the room. They came from systems in Ohio, Virginia, South Dakota, Louisiana, Washington, and California, ranging from single-region systems to a 38-hospital network.

Inneo and the Healthcare Development & Innovation Group (HDIG) have formed a joint venture that helps rural hospitals build innovation programs they can fund and sustain. Rural hospitals carry real margin and workforce pressure, with little room to experiment. They still need to innovate to improve margins, ease workforce strain, adopt better technology, and create new revenue streams. The barrier is usually infrastructure: funding, an internal team, and the expertise required to run an innovation program or venture arm. For most rural hospitals, building that capability alone is not feasible.

250 years of America. 275 years of American healthcare.

On July 4, the United States turns 250 years old. America's first hospital is even older. Pennsylvania Hospital opened in Philadelphia in 1751, a full 25 years before the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Franklin helped start it. New York Hospital followed in 1771. So, when the founders gathered in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776, the city already had a hospital, a pharmacy, and a medical school. Care for the sick got here before the country did.
